Ceramic flower meadow opens to kick off London 2012 Festival
    18:32 | 02/05/2012

A ceramics installation titled “The English Flower Garden” by Paul Cummins has opened at Chiswick House until May 27 to kick off the London 2012 Festival.

The installation is made up of a total of 11,500 individually hand-thrown flowers. They are exhibited in front of the venue's Ionic Temple. It is the first in a series of installations to be held across the country.

Six other installations will be held at: The Secret Gardens of Sandwich, Blenheim Palace in Oxford, the Houses of Parliament, Althrop Estate in Northampton, Castle Howard in York and the Southbank Centre until September 17.

Ceramics artist Paul Cummins has installed hundreds of flower heads at
Chiswick House Gardens in London as part of
    the 2012 Cultural Olympiad celebrations.

Cummins has previously created large-scale installations at Devonshire's
Chatsworth House, Derby Royal Hospital, Alscot Estate and Blenheim Palace.

To create the flower heads he kneads a large wedge of raw clay, which is then
thrown on a potter's wheel to form three or four flowers in succession.

Flowers are carved using a potter's pen, with inspiration taken from
    drawings and photographs.
