For the first time, a Vietnamese – Hungarian student has won the award for "outstanding student, outstanding athlete of the Republic of Hungary in 2011", she is Thuroczy Karolina My Lan.
On April 5, the Hungarian Minister of Human Resources presented this award to My Lan.
Her father is Hungarian and her mother is Vietnamese. is the first Vietnamese origin teen to be given this award. The two sisters Karolina My Lan and Vicky Ly Anh go to Hanoi every year to visit the relatives of their mother and to learn to speak and write Vietnamese. In previous years, Vietnamese newspapers also mentioned to the two girls when they received awards along with their synchronized swimming team.
Talking about the hobby of her two daughters, Mrs Phan Bich Thien said that they both knew how to swim at five years old, but My Lan was totally passionate about synchronized swimming.
The award "outstanding student, outstanding athlete of the Republic of Hungary in 2011" is an annual grand prize of the Hungarian government for students from grade 6 to college and university level with outstanding results in academics and sports. To be considered for the award, in addition to outstanding studying results at school, the student must also gain achievements in the national contests for outstanding students and in term of sports, they must have achieved medals from national and international competition.
In 2011, My Lan was an outstanding student with the absolute Grade Point Average of the total year of 5.0, winning the third prize in the Bolyai math team competition, and the second prize at the initiative competition for student at grade 6.
Besides, My Lan has won the gold medal of the Republic of Hungary Cup and two silver medals of the Hungarian National Champion in synchronized swimming teams and was chosen for the children’s team representing the Republic of Hungary which won a bronze medal in European Cup Championship in Belgium. With the above achievements, My Lan is one of the two synchronized swimming athletes of Hungary given this award by the government this year.
Schools or universities and sports federations are very proud to have a student or athlete winning this award. The school where My Lan is studying is also very happy because this is the first time the school has a student winning this great prize.
Karolina My Lan said that the native countries of both her father and her mother are spiritual fulcrum for her parents’ efforts – her father, an owner of castle hotel in Hungary as well as her parents’ activities as a bridge for diplomacy, education, economic cooperation between many agencies and organizations of Vietnam and Hungary. My Lan also very much loves Vietnam, her mother’s native country.
"Nothing is impossible. Many think that outstanding students cannot get high results in sports, or that good athletes are unable to achieve excellence result in study. But today the students present here are vivid evidence of the harmony of excellent intellectual development and high achievements in sports. This is the pride of Hungary and I congratulate the students achieving the awards," the Minister of Human Resources said at the award ceremony at the Hungarian Sports Palace.
My Lan said that she is very happy with the comment the Minister that "nothing is impossible". “I have many dreams and plans ahead but I will always maintain my love for the art swimming,” she said.
