Nearly 4,500 Khmer families in remote areas of the southern province of Tra Vinh have gained access to power as they are preparing for their traditional New Year festival, Chol Chnam Thmay, which will fall on April 13-15.

They are first families benefitting from a project to bring power to nearly 20,000 households in the province, mainly Khmer families in remote areas of 83 communes in 7 districts.

Under the project, which has total investment of VND 228 billion, 861 kilometres of various capacity power lines will be built, while 418 transformer stations and 20,000 electricity metres will be installed.

Seven months after beginning implementation, 246 kilometres of electric lines have been built, and hundreds of transformer stations have been installed, completing nearly 70% of the project.

The project is expected to be completed this year, bringing the rate of rural families and Khmer families who have access to power in the province to 95%./.
