Essay contest launched on occasion of “Year of Europe in Vietnam”
    17:29 | 28/03/2006
CPV: On 28 March, in Hanoi, a ceremony to launch an essay contest celebrating the “Year of Europe in Vietnam” was jointly organised in Hanoi by the Vietnam Student Union and the European Commission delegation to Vietnam.
This event is part of a series of joint European Union-Vietnam activities to celebrate Europe Day (9 May) and the “Year of Europe” in Vietnam, as designated by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai in the decision to enact the Master Plan for the future of European Union (EU)-Vietnam relations.
The launching ceremony took place at the Institute of International Relations, with the participation of students and lecturers.
The essay contest, an initiative of the European Commission delegation to Vietnam, in cooperation with the Student Union, is open to all Vietnamese citizens under 30 years, with a particular focus on, but not limited to, young journalists, researchers and practitioners in the field of international relations, and students of relevant disciplines.
Participants are invited to write on either of two topics: “Regional cooperation and integration: EU and Southeast Asian experiences”, and “Cultural diversity: the richness that defines both Europe and South East Asia”.
Speaking at the event, Doctor Markus Cornaro, Ambassador-Head of the European Commission delegation to Vietnam said: “The EU and its member States cherish their growing closeness with Vietnam. We are happy to see that we are the first international partner with which Vietnam wishes to develop a longer-term strategic vision on the bilateral relationship. Vietnam is the first ASEAN member to have set out such a strategy. This is also an indication of the increasingly important role Vietnam is playing as a motto in broader EU-ASEAN relations.”
The contest will run until 10th May. A jury will select the 15 best essays, and will award main prizes, as well as twelve consolation prizes. An awards ceremony will take place in late May. A separate launching ceremony is being organized in Ho Chi Minh City at the University of Architecture.
