CPV: The Vietnam Research and Education Network (VinaREN) was successfully connected to the Trans-Eurasia Information Network 2 (TEIN2) during a ceremony held in Ha Long City on June 8 by the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology.
Vice Minister Tran Quoc Thang, Mr Mario Campolargo, senior official from the European Commission (EC), and senior officials from relevant Vietnamese and foreign organisations attended the event.
The successful connection linked VinaREN to other National Research and Education Networks in China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Australia. VinaREN as an integral part of the first large-scale Asian regional high speed research network-the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN2)-provides Vietnamese academics with unprecedented ability to participate in world-class collaborative research projects.
The ceremony was held as part of the ASEM ICT senior officials’ meeting, the first Asia-Europe Meeting dedicated to information and communication technologies, which signifies an important step in realizing the commitments made by ASEM Ministers at the 5th ASEM Summit held in Hanoi in 2004. The TEIN2 initiative is a direct result of the ASEM dialogue and is one of its most successful achievements.
Speaking at the event, Vice Minister Tran Quoc Thang said: “For Vietnam, this is the first time a national research and education information network will be established and developed, with network connections through an Asian regional infrastructure to Europe, Asia and most parts of the world, thus encouraging increased research collaboration between the Vietnamese and the international scientific communities. With the possible applications of TEIN2 in telemedicine, e-culture, e-learning and disaster prevention, we believe the initiative will bring about tremendous opportunities for researchers and educators in Vietnam, as well as in Europe and Asia, to expand their scientific research and international collaboration capacity and capability.”
TEIN2 will connect Asia to the European research network GEANT2, the world’s most advanced international research and education network, and provides the Asia-Pacific countries with a gateway to global research collaboration. Telemedicine, disaster warning, oceanographic research and climate modelling and e-learning are prominent among the list of innovative applications to be brought about by TEIN2 and national research and education networks such as VinaREN.
Mr Mário Campolargo from the European Commission emphasised that TEIN2 and VinaREN are a catalyst for cooperative research and education in important areas. As part of the EC’s strategy for promoting global connectivity by supporting regional backbones and interconnecting them to the European network GEANT2, TEIN2 enables Vietnamese researchers to work with their counterparts within the region, in Europe and beyond, as they respond to global challenges, while addressing local concerns.”
The EC is contributing 10 million euro (80%) to TEIN2 up to the end of 2007.
The TEIN2 network is managed by DANTE, the research networking organisation which currently operates projects in Europe, Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East.
