Opening of award ceremony for the quiz and painting competition “the European Union through the eyes of Vietnamese children”
    16:22 | 27/12/2005
CPV: More than 40 prizes were awarded to the most talented children participating in the competition “the European Union through the eyes of Vietnamese children” at a ceremony held at the Quang Trung primary school in Hanoi on December 27th.
The competition is a joint initiative launched by the Delegation of the European Commission to Vietnam and Children Newspaper in early August 2005. Mr Willy Vandenberghe-first counselor/head of cooperation section of the EC delegation to Vietnam and Mr Vu Quang Vinh-editor in chief of Children newspaper and director of the Vietnam fund for young talent attended the event.
Launched in early August 2005, the quiz and picture painting competition “the EU through the eyes of Vietnamese children” targets children between the ages of 7 and 14. As the first contest about a 25 members EU, “the EU through the eyes of Vietnamese children” comprises interesting quizzes published weekly in Children newspaper about EU countries, articles providing general knowledge for local children about the EU. The contest will also publish the best pictures on the theme of Europe by Vietnamese children.
According to Mr Vu Quang Vinh, it was very difficult for the jury to select the 100 best pictures and then the best of the best to receive prizes. He added that he was really impressed by Vietnamese's children magnificent works of innocence and expression about the EU.
The competition has exceeded the expectations of the organizing committee, with nearly one thousand pictures and nearly two thousand letters answering the questions sent to the newspaper by children all over Vietnam.
Mr Willy Vandenberghe said that the organizing committee was overwhelmed with the kids' enthusiasm. He said that the nearly 1,000 pictures from children all over Vietnam competing in this exciting game were probably the strongest representation not only for the success of the competition itself, but above all for the growing importance and popularity of the bilateral relationship between the EU and Vietnam.
Overtaking other young talents, 11-year-old Le Khanh Ha, a pupil from 6A9 grade of the Nguyen Truong To primary school (Hanoi) won the special prize. Two A prizes, five B prizes, 10 C prizes and 22 consolation prizes were awarded to other schoolchildren throughout Vietnam.
